VIDEO: What does reliable transportation enable?

Knowledge walls aren’t just about creating a beautiful artifact. They are also research tools. Learn how we used knowledge walls to support the Better Bus initiative to improve Metrobus for the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia region.

If you had reliable public transportation, what would that enable in your life? Seeing friends? Getting to class? Discovering a new museum?

This is one of the questions we asked this past spring when we partnered with NeoNiche Strategies and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transport Authority to support the Better Bus initiative to improve Metrobus for the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia region. NeoNiche Strategies produced 50 events as part of this effort, five of which we were honored to support with visual notetaking

Our team of visual notetakers—including Lauren Green, Jim Nuttle and Renatta Algalarrondo—designed what we call “knowledge walls,” or a live mural, where participants answer a prompt on a sticky, and we transcribe and illustrate the comments.

Knowledge walls aren’t just about creating a beautiful artifact. They are also research tools. If you look across the visuals, you can see patterns in the sentiment, such as a desire to be on time and a priority for safety. You can also observe needs specific to individual communities. In some areas, cleanliness was a bigger priority, whereas, for others, it was having quiet time on their commute.

Check out this video from MetroForward highlighting how we used visuals to support this initiative.
